About the Vineyard
Shelburne Vineyard first began in 1998 and since then it has been their mission to heighten Vermont’s wine region. With the ability to craft both classical and modern wines, their selections provide a wide variety for different tastes and palates. The creation of the vineyard actually started from humble origins. Ken Albert, the original founder, saw potential in Vermont’s terrain and so he planted a few hybrid grapevines behind his home, which only yielded enough for a small batch of bottles.
The vineyard began to amp up its production and quality and in 2008, Ethan Joseph began working at Shelburne full-time, after having worked part-time at the vineyard while studying natural resources at the University of Vermont. After 10 years of experience from his mentor, Ken, coupled with his own self-education, Ethan continues to produce a diverse roster of Vermont wines.
The Production
The majority of the grapes used in Shelburne Vineyard are cold-hardy hybrid grapes that have been cultivated by a cross-pollinating of Vitis vinifera grapes with Vitis riparia grapes. The reason for the grapes being cross-pollinated with Vitis riparia grapes is due to their ability to resist pests and diseases, which allows them to grow in Vermont's harsh conditions, which often feature subzero temperature winters, rainy springs, and humid summers. Through the careful use of site selection, vineyard management, and low intervention, Shelburne has been able to manage the hybrid grapes for over 21 years to produce delicious wines.
When it comes to storing and aging the wines in barrels, the vineyard utilizes American-made hybrid oak barrels that have been constructed from French, American, and Hungarian oak. The vineyard also has an emphasis on being energy efficient and uses lightweight glass bottles to lessen waste.
Other Services
In addition to providing amazing wine, Shelburne Vineyard also provides other services as well, such as their wine club. Some benefits to the wine club include 15% off quarterly shipments of new wines, a 15% discount on wine purchases that also includes wine tastings, access to limited released wines, notification of special events such as cellar tastings, wine pairing dinners, concerts, festivals, and classes.
