So you want to get into off-roading, huh? Well there are a few things it would benefit you to know before you set out on that first run. Like all professions and hobbies in life, knowing the basic terms can help you understand what you're doing significantly, especially if someone is talking to you about it and throwing out jargon you wouldn't otherwise understand. Take a seat and listen close as Goss Dodge Chrysler gives you the rundown of the vocabulary you need to know.

4x4 High:  This means all-purpose four-wheel drive. The "4x4" refers to, of course, all four wheels being powered by the powertrain. The "high" refers to the gear ratio, meaning that it's the same as the ratio you use when your vehicle is in two-wheel drive.

4x4 Low: This is when four-wheel drive mode is engaged but you're employing a lower gear ratio. The result will be a lower speed with higher torque; if you get stuck in a ditch or need to climb some big rocks, this is what you want to get the lift and power to tackle all obstacles.

Approach Angle: This is how steep of an angle your vehicle can go up or down without the body or suspension scraping on the surface you're trying to climb.

Wheelbase: The distance from the middle of the front wheels to the middle of the back wheels. Directly affects approach angle, so keep both in mind at all times.

Rock Massage: This is what happens when you try to climb something too steep and have a little accident. Take it from us, you don't want to be talking about rock massages.

Now that you have some basic terms in your vocabulary, you're ready to start preparing further. What to bring, where to go, how to get out of tough situations: all of these should be on your check list. However, the very first thing you need is a vehicle equipped for off-road travel! If you're in the market, come on down to our South Burlington, VT dealership and take a look at the amazing new RAM models we have that are sure to impress.
